Lagardère Travel Retail renews destination merchandise concession at Singapore Changi Airport

SINGAPORE. Lagardère Travel Retail has extended its concession for souvenir stores at Singapore Changi Airport terminals 1, 2 and 3 for a further five years, taking it to 2027. The company has managed the ‘Discover Singapore’ stores across the airport’s terminals since 2008.

The Discover Singapore concept has brought the diverse culture of the city state to travellers since 2008; a new concept is being rolled out under the new concession

Lagardère Travel Retail Chief Strategy and Development Officer & Regional COO Asia Severine Lanthier said: “We are ecstatic to strengthen our partnership with Changi Airport Group and serve travellers in one of the world’s most awarded airports. ‘Discover Singapore’ is our pioneering multi-brand concept with Changi Airport, a true Sense of Place experience.

“We have continuously worked together through the years to innovate and deliver the gift and souvenirs of tomorrow. Our shared aspirations, mutual trust and longstanding partnership for over two decades have made it possible for us to look past the current challenges in travel retail and focus on delivering a new and exciting concept which will exceed travellers’ expectations.”

Changi Airport Group Managing Director of Airside Concessions Teo Chew Hoon said: “Lagardère Travel Retail has been a committed and supportive partner to Changi Airport for many years. With a joint vision to continue rejuvenating and developing the gift and souvenirs concept, the new ‘Discover Singapore’ will showcase not only iconic and new local offerings but also popular Southeast Asia gift and souvenirs, with the aim of delivering best-in-class retail experiences. We are also excited to collaborate with Lagardère Travel Retail to bring gift and souvenirs to travellers and non-travellers through our digital platform – iShopChangi.”

Local gifts, wellness, fashion and travel items and local delicacies are showcased in vibrant colour in the stores

Changi Airport was one of the first airports to debut the ‘Discover’ concept by Lagardère Travel Retail, which aimed to showcase Sense of Place and local hospitality to travellers passing through Singapore, using “emotionally-driven design and storytelling concepts”.

The next-generation ‘Discover Singapore’ concept was developed by the retailer in collaboration with the Singapore Management University to address the changing needs of travellers, with a new concept piloted in Terminal 1 in December 2019.

Enhancements to the remaining stores will take place in the coming months to serve returning customers as travel restrictions are lifted. Inspired by the cosmopolitan garden city, emblems and icons such as the Merlion and the Orchid will take centre-stage and enhance the concept’s identity, said the retailer.

The company said in a statement: “The new ‘Discover Singapore’ will showcase an entirely fresh and open concept, with lightness and greenery weaved into its design. It aims to evoke in travellers an emotional connection to Singapore and its people, delivering a unique experience through the celebration of the country’s cultural diversity, local passions, and beliefs. Travellers can also expect to find new and exciting curated gifts and souvenirs from all around Southeast Asia, a reflection of Singapore’s geographical history and important identity as the key trading port for the region.”

Sustainability will be a feature of the design, with the adoption of circular design principles, methods of construction and the use of innovative materials.

Lagardère Travel Retail said that ‘Discover Singapore’ is a “true embodiment” of its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility through its PEPS strategy (Planet, Ethics, People, Social). This includes sustainable design, construction methodologies and dedicated actions towards reducing environmental waste, and increasing community involvement and social contribution.

‘Discover Singapore’ features local brands across various categories such as artisanal gifts, wellness, fashion, travel and local delicacies. Popular items include Tiger Balm, Prima and Koli alongside special branded collections such as Disney-in-Singapore.
