Pune, 25th June 2023: Access to affordable emergency and critical care has long been a daunting challenge for marginalized communities in India. The scarcity of ICU beds, with less than 2.5 beds per 100,000 population, adds to the gravity of the situation. This dire circumstance leaves families in a distressing cycle of debt as they struggle to arrange funds for life-saving treatments. However, amidst these challenges, several organizations have stepped forward to address this issue and offer hope for a better future.
In response to these pressing needs, Spherule Foundation and CPR Group (USA) have launched an initiative to bolster critical care across the country. This involves setting up or upgrading intensive care units (ICUs) and Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in hospitals, specifically targeting low-income communities.
Spherule Foundation( www.spherule.org) is a non-profit organization dedicated to making a positive impact across India mainly in the domains of education, health, women empowerment, and environment. With a pan-India presence, the foundation diligently works towards addressing key societal challenges and promoting sustainable development.
Under the “Strengthening Critical Care in India” initiative Spherule Foundation has adopted a meticulous due diligence process in selecting hospitals to receive ICU /NICU units. With a focus on maximizing the impact of these life-saving resources, the foundation has implemented a rigorous evaluation system to ensure that selected hospitals possess the capacity and capability to make the best use of these units for the benefit of marginalized communities.
“Strengthening Critical Care in India” initiative has already supported many hospitals and as part of this transformative initiative, Mai Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune also underwent a significant upgrade to its ICU, augmenting its capacity to accommodate a total of 23 beds.
The upgraded ICU Unit at Mai Mangeshkar Hospital inaugurated on Sunday, June 25th, 2023, and this transformative project was made possible through the generous support and partnership of exl Service.com Private Limited (EXL) as part of their commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Following the inauguration, Dr. Supriya Kurlekar, the Medical Director of Mai Mangeshkar Hospital, expressed her gratitude on behalf of the entire hospital team to EXL, Spherule Foundation, and the CPR group for their support in this noble cause. She also emphasized that the newly installed ICU setup would undeniably play a crucial role in saving the lives of individuals in dire need.
Mai Mangeshkar, a part of the Lata Mangeshkar Medical Foundation, has a longstanding commitment to providing services to marginalized communities at affordable rates. Additionally, they offer free treatment to extremely needy individuals. Situated along the busy NH4 highway, the hospital also serves as an emergency care center for trauma patients.
