The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) aims to have India recognised globally as a jewellery tourism hub. The GJC will hold an India Jewellery Shopping Festival for businesses from June 1 to October 31 and one for consumers from October 12 to November 17 to promote the industry.
The IJSF is designed to celebrate India’s rich art heritage and culture, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council reported on its website. The events will include auctioning of fine jewellery pieces for corporate social responsibility activities.
“This event is similar to the Dubai Festival, which attracts lots of attention from global business leaders and consumers,” said the GJC’s director and IJSF convenor Dinesh Jain, the GJEPC reported. “IJSF aims to build credibility for Indian jewellers and educate consumers about innovations.”
To increase global awareness about India as a jewellery tourism destination, the GJC has partnered with the government’s Tourism Ministry as well as with travel agents to incentivise touring packages. The GJC expects its IJSF event to generate sales worth Rs 12,000 crore during its business-to-business phase.
“Large industry players have shown interest in participating in this event,” said GJC chairman Saiyam Mehra. “GJC will encourage only credible jewellers with a formal business model and promote them to become organised and follow the best business practices.”
