Naveen Patnaik inaugurates PGIMER at Capital Hospital

BHUBANESWAR: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday inaugurated the newly started Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) at Capital Hospital here. He also interacted with postgraduate (PG) students during their induction ceremony organised by the institute.
Naveen said the institute will play a significant role in providing quality education and expert healthcare to people in the capital and the state. He advised the students to work for the welfare of the people and wished them the best for their future careers.
In September, the institute had received final permission from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start PG courses from the current academic session. Master of surgery (MS)/doctor of medicine (MD) courses have been started in six specialties with a total of 24 seats.
The institute has admitted five students each in obstetrics and genecology (O&G), general medicine and general surgery department, four in pediatrics, three in pulmonary medicine and two in orthopedics department. Classes have started from November.
Nibedita Pani, director of the PG institute, said they conducted an induction ceremony for the PG students taking admission for the current academic session on Friday. “They will be our first batch of the institute. Faculty members have given talks to motivate the newly joined students,” she added.
Official sources said construction of a new academic block meant for the PG institute at a cost of Rs 284 crore is underway. It is expected to be completed in late 2023. “This institute will give a boost to availability of specialist and super specialist services in the state capital besides providing a platform for health research,” said an official of the health and family welfare department.
Among others, health minister Naba Kishore Das, chief secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra, health secretary Shalini Pandit and officials of PGIMER and Capital Hospital were present.
